Go Back Traditional Pottery Production Today in the Gui Community of Kuje Local Government Area of Abuja, Nigeria.
Pottery making is an old profession. In Nigeria, it is an occupation usually associated with women who exhibit their artistic prowess in different ways. This paper records the pottery production processes employed by the women of the Gui community in Kuje Local Government Area, Abuja, Nigeria. Through a step-by-step recording and reporting, it seeks to shed light on the tools and methods still in use today in their traditional pottery production. The study used ethnographic research method of data collection to elicit information from knowledgeable potters in the community. This involved both personal and participant observation. Pictorial observation formed important aspects of the information gathering techniques. This paper shows that although the traditional pottery in Gui is in decline, it has neither been lost completely nor is it under any threat of being extinct.
